Today I bring to you perhaps the single greatest band in all the world: The Shaggs!

Still want to hear about the Shaggs? Can’t say I blame you. They’re somewhat of a legend in the music world, a band that has made their mark being completely, absolutely, entirely horrible. They’re arguably the worst band ever to play music and release a professional album. Intrigued? Here’s more information.

The Shaggs

About their album, Philosophy of the World, it has been said that: “There’s an innocence to these songs and their performances that’s both charming and unsettling. Hacked-at drumbeats, whacked-around chords, songs that seem to have little or no meter to them … being played on out-of-tune, pawn-shop-quality guitars all converge, creating dissonance and beauty, chaos and tranquility, causing any listener coming to this music to rearrange any pre-existing notions about the relationships between talent, originality, and ability. There is no album you might own that sounds remotely like this one.”
Reportedly, during the recording sessions the band would occasionally stop playing, claiming one of them had made a mistake and that they needed to start over, leaving the sound engineers to wonder how the girls could tell when a mistake had been made. (wikipedia)

There are people who say the Shaggs are influential and incredible in their subtlety. Others just find their music to be akin to Chinese water torture. Me, I think it’s a combination of both.
They’re so awful, they’re amazing.
