SPOTLIGHT: The Open Door EP – Death Cab for Cutie.

Oh, not another music blog singing the praises of DCFC! Alas, my good readers, it is true. I am as steadfast a fan as they get, listening to their albums at least once a day. However, today I come with a purpose: the impending release of a new EP, titled The Open Door.

Death Cab for Cutie

Containing songs not featured on their most recent (and spectacular) album Narrow Stairs, the EP has four never-before-heard releases as well as a demo of “Talking Bird.” Once again, Ben Gibbard delivers the simplistic charms packaged neatly into one hell of an emotional punch. A band that hasn’t faltered in the face of ginormous popularity growth, Death Cab brings it home everytime, and it’s why they are one of my favorite bands.

YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING TO: The American Analog Set.

The American Analog Set.
Indie rock band from Austin, Texas.
Also known as The AmAnSet.

American Analog Set

“The group is led by singer and guitarist Andrew Kenny. Additional members include or have included Lee Gillespie, Mark Smith, Craig McCaffrey, Tom Hoff, Lisa Roschmann and Sean Ripple. Their name derives from their preference for analog rather than digital recording media. Formed in 1995, the group has released six full-length albums.
In October 2005, rumors began spreading across the internet that the group was on the verge of disbanding. The band quickly refuted such rumors, but added that they may not tour again due to their obligations with other projects.”

Why more people aren’t listening to them boggles my mind. You may know Andrew Kenny from a little compilation album he made with Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. On it, Gibbard covered an American Analog Set song, “Choir Vandals,” and it has since been falsely labeled as a Death Cab song. Kenny’s voice is very much like Gibbard’s in its simple and lilting intensity, but AAS has a slightly more rock feel.

COVER: “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” – Amy Millan.

It’s no secret that one of my absolute favorite songs is “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie off their album Plans. (A defining moment of my adolescent life was singing it with Ben Gibbard at a concert once….but I digress.)
Recently I stumbled on a cover done by Canadian artist Amy Millan. Known for her work with the bands Stars and Broken Social Scene, Amy has had a fairly successful music career on her own, with her album Honey from the Tombs released by Arts & Crafts records in 2006.

Amy Millan

In contrast to the simple elegance of Death Cab, her voice has a warm country element. In her hands the song becomes something else entirely, a tale about two lovers told with a twang.
