COVER: “Wonderwall” – Ryan Adams.

No nineties playlist can be complete without the song “Wonderwall” by Oasis. It stands for a decade of broken hearts and stonewashed jeans, singing that angst as loud as possible. But as a faithful member of Generation Y Not (and a steadfast hater of that name), I believe that anthem could work for us. Take out the poppy undertones, add an acoustic guitar and husky voice that makes you cringe, and you’ve got yourself a deal. And who better to deliver than Ryan Adams, the golden boy of tempermental youth and the epitome of the American rockstar ideal.

The list of covers that are better than the originals is very slim, but I believe this song makes the cut. Adams’ vocals elevate Oasis’ teen anthem to something less juvenile and more bittersweet. Alas, it is a karaoke classic no more — but it’s evolved into something so much better than that.
